Jim and Melody Mielke never thought of themselves as “inspiring,” but by paying it forward, they’ve ignited a spark in their community, in their vocations and in the generous hearts of others.
The two agreed it was important for them to give back to the areas that gave them so much joy, value and success: farming and nursing. In 2012, they started an agricultural scholarship at South Dakota State University. Most recently, they made a legacy gift to support critical care programs and nurse education at Avera Health, in celebration of Melody's retirement.
“I’ve had an incredible career at Avera, blending the art and science of nursing, providing competent care with a compassionate heart,” Melody said. "We felt it was our responsibility and stewardship to pass it on to others through our legacy gift."
Melody worked for Avera for 43 years — 21 at Avera McKennan Hospital and 22 at Avera Heart Hospital. She was part of the original team that opened Avera Heart Hospital and remained there until her retirement.
Estate and Retirement Giving
When Jim and Melody started talking about their estate plans, a retirement planning session helped them discover various ways to support the organizations they loved, including retirement accounts, donor-advised funds, trusts and more.
“Avera was near the top for us because the mission and core values match our own; providing for patients and nurses in critical care was a natural fit," says Jim. "We utilized various channels to create a legacy gift plan we are proud of."
The Mielkes’ thoughtful decision to support Avera has inspired others to consider their own legacies. Two Avera colleagues shared with Melody that they are working on their estate plans to support patients and families throughout Avera, too.
The scripture Melody chose to close her retirement letter seems to summarize the Mielkes’ heartfelt mission to live with gratitude and generosity: “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work…” 2 Corinthians 9:8.
