Leaving a Legacy of Care

Legacy giving is a meaningful way for donors to leave a lasting impact and support the causes they cherish most. When Hector DeSchepper suffered a serious stroke in the 1980s, his family feared he would never be able to care for himself again. But after one month in the Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center rehabilitation unit, and with a strong sense of determination, Hector made a miraculous recovery.

He lived independently at home for nearly another decade before passing away from a heart attack. His wife, Carol — a longtime employee of Avera McKennan — still remembers the exceptional care Hector received from his rehab team that gave him his second chance.

Endowment for Caregiver Education

To express her family’s deep gratitude, Carol established the DeSchepper Rehabilitation Education Scholarship Endowment to help support continuing education for the talented, deserving caregivers in the rehab department.

“I know there is always need for support through philanthropy and things like the DeSchepper Scholarship,” Carol says. “It brings me joy to meet the scholarship winners who have such bright futures. I’m committed to helping provide the highest level of care in a program that makes a difference.”

Benefactors like Carol are ensuring that care and compassion endure for generations through their legacy giving. In the past year alone, 40 new legacy gifts totaling more than $14 million were established with Avera.
