After her successful treatment decades ago, Mary Lais thought breast cancer was a closed chapter in her life.
Mary was eager to channel her energy — and her gratitude for Avera, where she received care — into volunteering, donating and even joining our Foundation team to help others facing cancer. She never imagined that one of those people would be her daughter-in-law, Faron.
Upon Faron’s breast cancer diagnosis, a familiar fear crept in for Mary; but she also felt something much more powerful: hope. The same hope she found at Avera.
Mary has witnessed firsthand how philanthropy has transformed cancer care over the years — from advancements in genetic testing to the most promising treatments, to patient resources like the beautiful wig Faron received, courtesy of generous supporters.
“I wish everyone could have seen the smile on Faron’s face when she received her wig,” Mary said.
